Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the page-level practice of writing and structuring content so generative engines can extract clean answers from it. It includes answer-first paragraph structure, FAQ schema with conversational question phrasing, How-To schema where relevant, definitional content blocks, and clear authorial attribution. Pages optimised for AEO are more often quoted by AI engines and more often surfaced in Google AI Overviews and featured snippets.
The ranking algorithms and the citation algorithms inside generative engines optimise for related but distinct things. Ranking favours topical relevance, authority and engagement signals. Citation favours direct answerability - can the engine extract a clean two-sentence answer from this page that it can confidently attribute. A page can rank well but be poorly quotable, and a poorly-ranked page with clean answer structure can get cited above it. AEO is the discipline of being citable, even when classical ranking is mature.
A clean answer block has three parts. A direct one-sentence answer to the question implied by the page title - the engine can lift this as-is. A two-to-four-sentence elaboration that adds the most important caveats, qualifiers or specifics - the engine can lift this when the user asks a slightly deeper version of the question. A reference to your unique credibility on the topic (years of experience, original data, named authorial expertise) - this is the citation hook. Pages that follow this format get cited at rates substantially above industry baseline.
Being citable is the new being ranked. The pages that get quoted by Perplexity today are the ones that win category authority tomorrow.
Traditional copywriting builds tension before resolution - open with a story, build the case, deliver the recommendation. AEO inverts the structure for any page where direct answerability matters. The engine cannot read for narrative; it reads for the lifted answer. That does not mean storytelling has no place - it means storytelling sits below the answer block, supporting and enriching, not delaying. The writers we use understand both modes and apply each where it serves the page.
Old SEO writing buried the answer below context. AEO inverts that — give the answer immediately, then explain. Counterintuitively this lifts time-on-page because readers stay for the depth once the headline has earned trust.
We do not stuff schema with everything Google permits. We deploy what is accurate, useful and signal-rich, because over-stuffed schema gets ignored by engines and risks being treated as spam.
FAQ schema works best when the questions match how buyers actually phrase queries — "how much does X cost in Lagos", not "what is the pricing structure for X". The difference is significant in citation rate.
Pages with named, credentialed authors get cited more often than anonymous content. We build out author profiles with verifiable expertise and link them properly to the content they wrote.

Where buyers have many specific questions and the brand that answers them clearly wins consideration.
Categories where AI engines especially favour authoritative sources and where being treated as one is a strategic moat.
Pages we optimise are quoted significantly more often by Perplexity, Bing Copilot and Google AI Overviews within sixty days.
AEO-optimised pages are dramatically more likely to win featured snippets, which lift overall click-through even outside the answer-engine context.
Answer-first structure converts more visitors into readers because they trust the page faster.
