SMS is the broadest-reach digital channel in Nigeria - it works on every phone, in every region, regardless of data coverage. For categories where reach matters more than rich content (microfinance, insurance, retail promotions to mass market, school communications, transactional confirmations), nothing else comes close. The cost per delivered message is meaningfully low. The open rate is effectively a hundred percent - SMS is read within minutes by a vast majority of recipients.

The discipline that separates good SMS marketing from spam is opt-in management. The Nigerian Data Protection Commission and the NCC both have evolving rules about consent and unsolicited messaging. Brands that disregard them face fines, sender-ID delisting and reputation damage. Sender ID matters more in Nigeria than recipients realise. A clean, registered sender ID through an NCC-approved aggregator delivers reliably to all major networks. A grey-market aggregator may save you ten naira per message but get blocked by MTN within weeks and Airtel within months. We manage sender ID registration, monitor delivery rates by network and aggregator, and route around degradation when one carrier starts under-delivering. Most Nigerian SMS marketing runs on long codes - regular eleven-digit numbers as the sender. They are cheap and easy to provision. Short codes - four to six digit numbers - cost meaningfully more but offer higher delivery rates, better keyword-based reply handling, and a more credible sender presence for transactional flows. For mass-market consumer brands and financial-services transactional flows, short codes are usually worth the investment. For occasional broadcast marketing to opted-in lists, long codes are fine.
